8 Quick Grounding Techniques to Use Between Clients

Taking just a few minutes to ground and centre yourself between clients can make all the difference in how you show up for each session. Whether it’s through breathwork, movement, or connecting with nature, these quick techniques will help you stay calm, balanced, and fully present for your next client.

8 Quick Grounding Techniques to Use Between Clients

by Lizzie Badger, Founder of the Pro-Touch Movement

Introduction

As therapists, we’re constantly tuning in to our clients’ needs, both physical and emotional. While that’s part of what makes the work so rewarding, it also means we can easily pick up on their energy—whether it’s stress, anxiety, or just their mood. Clients can sense when we’re frazzled or carrying tension from previous sessions, and that leftover energy can affect the atmosphere in the room. That’s why it’s so important to take a few minutes between clients to clear our heads, ground ourselves, and reset. By doing this, we’re not only taking care of ourselves, but we’re also ensuring that each client gets the best experience possible.

Here are eight super-quick grounding techniques you can use in between sessions to stay calm, centred, and ready for whoever walks through your door next.

  1. Deep Belly Breathing

Why it works: Deep breathing is one of the quickest ways to calm your nervous system. It helps you release any tension or stress you might have picked up, and it instantly brings you back to the present moment.

How to do it: Sit or stand comfortably and place your hands on your belly. Inhale through your nose for a count of four, feeling your belly expand. Hold for a moment, then exhale through your mouth for six counts. It helps even more to blow out slowly and evenly with pursed lips… as if a child blowing bubbles for fun. Imagine the delightful stream of rainbow bubbles you’re blowing too! Repeat for a few minutes, and let your mind settle and fill your room with bubbles…

  1. Grounding Visualization

Why it works: Visualization is great for bringing your energy back into balance. It helps you feel grounded and present, especially if you’ve been feeling scattered or drained.

How to do it: Close your eyes and imagine roots growing from your feet into the earth. As you breathe out, let go of any leftover energy from the last session, sending it down into the ground. As you breathe in, imagine pulling up calm, stable energy from the earth. Do this for a few minutes and let the visualization bring you back to centre.

  1. Shake it Off

Why it works: Movement is one of the best ways to shake off stress and tension. It gets your blood flowing and helps you feel lighter and more energized.

How to do it: Stand up and start by gently shaking your hands. Gradually shake your arms, shoulders, torso, and legs. Let yourself get loose! After a minute or two of shaking, stop and take a few deep breaths, feeling the tension melt away.

  1. Earthing or Grounding Outside

Why it works: There’s something magical about getting your feet on the ground—literally. Being outside and connecting with nature helps clear your mind and refresh your energy.

How to do it: If you have a few minutes and can step outside, kick off your shoes and stand barefoot on grass, dirt, or even concrete. Focus on the feeling of the earth beneath your feet, and just breathe. Let the natural world help you release any stress or tension you’ve been holding onto.

  1. Quick Meditation

Why it works: Meditation helps clear your mind and bring you back to the present moment. Even just a few minutes can make a huge difference in how you feel.

How to do it: Sit comfortably and set a timer for five minutes. Close your eyes and focus on your breath, allowing your thoughts to drift by without engaging with them. If you get distracted, gently bring your attention back to your breathing. After a few minutes, take a deep breath and open your eyes, feeling calm and clear.

  1. Aromatherapy Reset

Why it works: The right aroma can instantly shift your mood and bring you back into balance. Certain essential oils are especially good for grounding and calming.

How to do it: Choose an essential oil like frankincense, sandalwood, or vetiver. Place a drop or two in your palms, rub them together, and inhale deeply. Let the aroma wash over you and calm your mind.

  1. Mantra or Affirmation

Why it works: Repeating a mantra or affirmation helps you shift your mental energy. It’s a simple but powerful way to stay focused, clear, and positive.

How to do it: Pick a short, calming mantra like “I release and renew” or “I am grounded and present.” Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and repeat the mantra to yourself for a few minutes. Each time you say it, let it sink in and help you reset your energy.

  1. Tactile Grounding with Stones

Why it works: Crystals and grounding stones are amazing for helping you stay centred and balanced. Holding something tangible can help you feel more connected to the present moment.

How to do it: Choose a grounding stone like hematite, black tourmaline, or obsidian. Hold it in your hand and focus on its texture and weight. Imagine the stone absorbing any leftover energy from the previous session, leaving you feeling clear and grounded.

Conclusion

Taking just a few minutes to ground and centre yourself between clients can make all the difference in how you show up for each session. Whether it’s through breathwork, movement, or connecting with nature, these quick techniques will help you stay calm, balanced, and fully present for your next client. Plus, you’ll feel better too—because let’s be honest, we all need a little reset sometimes!
